The countdown to the “Skipwith-Roper Homecoming” celebration is on! 🏠 This groundbreaking reconstruction project led by thejxnproject honors the legacy of Abraham Peyton Skipwith, the first known Black homeowner in Richmond’s historic Jackson Ward neighborhood. In 1793, Skipwith built his 3-story gamble roof cottage and went on to become the first Black Virginian to execute his will in 1799 when he passed on his home and all of his belongings to his decedents. The cottage remained within the possession of Black Virginians through the 1950s when the home was forcibly removed by way of imminent domain to prepare for the construction of Interstate 95. This April, the thejxnproject is preparing the unveil their cottage rebuild, offering reflective community space, interactive exhibits, and programming to honor Skipwith as a pioneer and trailblazing Virginian.
