Not all fire starts from the ground. CAL FIRE uses a variety of tools to support prescribed fire operations, including the helitorch. A helitorch is an aerial ignition device mounted beneath a helicopter. It releases a controlled amount of ignited fuel to introduce low-intensity fire in targeted areas. This method allows crews to safely and efficiently treat large or difficult-to-access terrain while maintaining control over fire behavior.
