A fall in steep, remote terrain can turn serious fast.
On Sunday, a multi-agency response along the South Fork of the American River brought together local fire, law enforcement, and aviation resources to reach and rescue an injured hiker more than a mile into a canyon.
Thanks to strong coordination, crews were able to locate, treat, and safely extract the patient, who is expected to recover.
Before heading out:
• Let someone know your plans
• Stay on marked trails and watch your footing
• Carry water, a first aid kit, and a way to call for help
Remote rescues take time. Preparation helps keep you — and first responders — safe.
