Have you ever wondered how the hundreds of firefighters and other response team members are fed at large-scale incidents? CAL FIRE’s Mobile Kitchen Units (MKU) support feeding operations during emergencies like fires, floods, hazardous materials spills, and earthquakes. These kitchens prepare hot meals for emergency responders and sometimes affected communities during disasters. CAL FIRE has 11 MKUs statewide. One unit can store enough food to serve 500 meals upon arrival to an incident and can feed up to 5,000 people per day. CAL FIRE works with local vendors to supply food for incident meals.
