As Northern California celebrated the region’s first wildfire-prepared neighborhood, CAL FIRE’s Office of the State Fire Marshal was there to support a project bringing 24 fire-hardened homes to the El Dorado County community of Cameron Park. Home-hardening features include: 🔹 Zone 0 - a 5-foot non-combustible perimeter of crushed rock around each home to reduce ember ignition at the base of walls. 🔹 Enclosed eaves to limit ember intrusion. 🔹 Class A fire-rated roofing. 🔹 Dual-pane, tempered windows to improve heat and impact resistance. 🔹 Non-combustible exterior materials, including fiber-cement siding and stucco to ground level. 🔹 Fire-smart landscaping using drought-tolerant plants and spacing trees away from structures. ➤ Why it matters: Post-fire analysis by the Insurance Institute for Business & Home Safety found homes with burnable material within five feet of the structure have a significantly higher chance of damage or destruction. #HomeHardening #Zone0 #CALFIREOSFM ...
