Earlier this week, CAL FIRE/Fresno County firefighters quickly knocked down a structure fire and contained it to a single room—thanks to a fast, coordinated response.
Winter is a higher-risk time for home fires. According to the U.S. Fire Administration, winter home fires account for about 30% of fire deaths and 23% of fire-related injuries nationwide. Increased use of space heaters, fireplaces, furnaces, and cooking—combined with more time spent indoors—raises the risk.
Reduce your risk this winter:
🔥 Keep flammable items at least 3 feet from heat sources.
🚫 Never use an oven to heat your home.
🔌 Turn off space heaters when leaving a room or going to sleep.
🧱 Have chimneys inspected and maintained.
🚨 Install and maintain working smoke and carbon monoxide alarms.
🕯️ Keep candles away from flammable items and never leave them unattended.
🚪 Practice a home escape plan.
Preparation and prevention make a difference.
