There’s a photograph from Laila Edwards’ 22nd birthday party in Wisconsin. She’s mid laugh, cutting her cake, surrounded by friends, family and sponsors who believed in her long before the rest of the world caught up. For a moment she looks exactly her age. Not the Olympian. Not the Red Bull athlete. Not the student fitting a social work degree around national titles and Team USA camps. Just a 22 year old at a celebration, with the people who were in her corner long before Milan. In this Glorious exclusive, photographed by Dominique Powers, we travelled to Wisconsin in January, on the ice, to a Wisconsin Badgers game, and to that party, spending time with Laila, her mother, her sisters, her aunt and the Cleveland Heights community that helped carry her to the podium.
