Isabel Allende recently said “It’s an honor” that her debut novel “The House of the Spirits,” or “La casa de los espíritus,” has faced ban attempts in the US. In an exclusive interview with Spanish news platform El Periódico, the 83-year-old author and journalist spoke about the magical realism classic’s newest Netflix adaptation and the censorship it’s faced in the US since 1994. Allende has been vocal about the dangers of censorship in literature throughout her career and even spoke up in defense of “The House of the Spirits” in 2013 after a group of parents at a North Carolina high school attempted to get it banned. Other Latina authors including Erika L.
