This snap of Winnipeg Jets goaltender Connor Hellebuyck was taken just prior to the start of training camp. What goes into capturing a player headshot? A lot more than you would expect. First of you, you have to arrive at the site and build your studio set, depending on the location, this could take up to an hour. Equipment required: 3 strobe lights (2 main lights for front, 1 for harilight), 3 light stands, a standard canvas backdrop, a backdrop stand, light modifiers (umbrella or softbox, personal preference), a light meter, sufficient power cables (if applicable), step stool, and camera gear. When players arrive, I look to provide consistency for all photos. I make sure their hair is nice and tidy. When they put their jersey on I hand-straighten every jersey making sure the shoulders, the neck, and logos are all straight. This is critical for the editing step. I use a progr...
