The Breakaway (or Shootout) - Stay on the goalie? Or follow the shooter? It's really a matter of preference. I choose the shooter and I'll tell you why... As photographers we've all been in this situation before, you are following a play deep in one end of the ice. Suddenly a lead pass sneaks by the defenders to a waiting forward on the opposing team and there is a one-on-one breakaway toward the other lone goalie. Your heart rate climbs as the surge of adrenaline hits your body. But you must control your camera as this play will be over in five seconds. The first thing I do is hold my breath as I try to cut down the camera shake. Next, I establish a clean frame where the shooter is being tracked by the camera's autofocus. I use the AF Servo mode for this. I prefer the setup where you press the trigger halfway to get a lock. Some photogs prefer the "back button focus" or whatever other button they have assigned to initiate their autofocus. That's fine too, do whatever makes you comf...
