One of the stars of The Paris Sales is this Jean-Michel Basquiat painting done not on canvas or paper, but on a window blind. With ‘Law Offices – Notary Public,’ Basquiat paints on a found object, going back to a format he used in the early days of his practice. Here, Sotheby’s Armance Gay takes us back to New York in the 1980s to share how this painting marked a turning point in Basquiat’s career. Sparse, frontal, and declarative, it’s a pioneering example of Basquiat’s symbolic vocabulary. ‘Law Offices – Notary Public’ is a highlight of the Modern & Contemporary Evening Auction at #SothebysParis 16 April.
