During a Tax Day press event, House Speaker Mike Johnson said the Pope should "expect some political response" on his recent comments about the war in Iran.
On Saturday, Pope Leo XIV denounced the “delusion of omnipotence” fueling the U.S.-Israel war in Iran and demanded political leaders stop and negotiate peace during an evening prayer service in St. Peter’s Basilica.
History’s first U.S.-born pope didn’t mention the United States or President Donald Trump in the service, and the prayer was planned before the U.S. and Iran began face-to-face negotiations in Pakistan.
Johnson, who is Southern Baptist, mentioned the "just war doctrine" in his remarks and said it is "a very well settled matter of Christian theology."
"There is a time to every purpose under Heaven," Johnson said.
