This image shows a close-up of a tapeworm head, known as a scolex. It was captured by Eugenijus Kavaliauskas for the Nikon Small World photomicrography competition. While the large circular structures look like glowing eyes, they are actually suckers used to attach to a host's intestinal wall. The sharp features at the bottom are hooks for extra grip.
