On 17 April 2013, New Zealand became the 13th country in the world to legalise same-sex marriage when the Marriage (Definition of Marriage) Amendment Act was passed in parliament. The bill passed with a vote of 77 in favour to 44 against and introduced equal marriage for all regardless of sex, sexual orientation or gender identity. It became law after receiving Royal Assent just two days later.
