The iconic Pride flag is set to return, and stay, at Stonewall National Monument following a legal victory for LGBTQ+ advocacy groups. The federal government filed an agreement in the US District Court for the Southern District of New York on Monday (13 April), permanently reinstating the flag as part of a settlement, ending a lawsuit sparked by its removal earlier this year under the Donald Trump administration. The case, brought by Lambda Legal and Washington Litigation Group’s clients Gilbert Baker Foundation, Village Preservation, and Equality New York, argued that removing the flag from the historic site was an unlawful attempt to erase queer history and visibility. Under the agreement, the Pride flag will be restored within days and can only be removed for practical reasons like maintenance.
