From raw metal to mission-critical hardware—this is how giant steel components are made. It starts with cast ingots or continuously cast billets, often weighing several tons. These are heated in furnaces to extreme temperatures until the metal becomes plastic (not molten), allowing it to be shaped without cracking. Next comes forging: massive hydraulic presses or power hammers apply controlled force to compress and shape the metal. This refines the grain structure, eliminates internal voids, and aligns the material for strength where it matters most. After forging, parts go through heat treatment—carefully controlled heating and cooling cycles—to achieve the desired balance of hardness, toughness, and fatigue resistance. Then comes machining. Precision CNC tools remove excess material and bring the component to exact tolerances, often within fractions of a millimeter.
