Carmine, one of the most historically significant red dyes, is derived from the dried bodies of Dactylopius coccus, a scale insect that lives as a parasite on prickly pear cacti. These insects produce carminic acid as a natural defense mechanism against predators. When harvested and processed, that compound becomes a remarkably stable, vivid crimson pigment used in high-end cosmetics, textiles, and even food products. The production process is both labor-intensive and chemically precise. Female cochineal insects—selected for their high carminic acid concentration—are cultivated on cactus pads under controlled conditions. After reaching maturity, they are carefully collected, then dried using heat or sunlight. It takes tens of thousands of insects to produce a small quantity of usable dye. Once dried, the insects are ground into a fine powder and subjected to an extraction process.
