In 1903, the first “teddy bear” was put up for sale. It was invented and designed by Rose and Morris Michtom, who were toy and candy store owners in Brooklyn, New York. The inspiration of the teddy bear is associated with President Theodore “Teddy” Roosevelt who on a hunting trip refused to shoot a 235-pound bear that had been tied to a tree. Roosevelt’s story story soon became a national story and it was an inspiration for the Michtoms to design the teddy bear.
