Johanna’s paintings on silk depict the complexity of the natural world, rendering organic forms that echo the rhythms of growth, movement, and transformation. Her practice is guided as much by observation as by experience, shaped by an evolving relationship with her materials. The very first time she touched silk with a brush full of dye, Johanna was exhilarated. The color became intense and deep, and the silk seemed to take on a life of its own—making the dye appear to shimmer, adding a subtle dimensionality. She was transfixed. Over the years, she struggled to master these media, working to control the flow of dye to achieve specific effects. At a turning point in her practice, Johanna experienced a shift in perspective.
