The breathtaking Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness in northern Minnesota is the most visited wilderness in the United States — for good reason. More than 150,000 people go there every year, drawn to its vast network of pristine lakes and rivers, its beautiful boreal forests, rare wildlife like wolves and Canada lynx, and the sheer solitude of its unspoiled landscapes. In 2023 the Biden administration enacted a 20-year ban to protect 225,000 acres of Superior National Forest, which lies in the watershed of the Boundary Waters, from risky copper mining. But, last month the U.S House of Representatives voted to permanently undo protections for the watershed of the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness in northern Minnesota. Now the last stand to keep the country's most popular wilderness area protected is in the Senate — they may vote on this within the next two weeks .
