Made from cut and carved pine, cypress, ash, and rope, this large, open woodwork sculpture has a body-like base from which a long neck-like form extends. In the late 1980s, Martin Puryear began making a series of neck and body-like forms. Here the body of the sculpture is made up of smoothly sanded wood slats that rise up out of a flat rough base punctured by screws and bolts. The neck likewise rises up from the base and is shaped by a pattern of smooth slats and coarse disks. Martin Puryear has long been interested in interior and exterior forms.
