Having already won the series, the Reds missed an opportunity for their second series sweep of the month when the Giants won, 3-0, at Great American Ball Park on April 16. It was a game in which the Reds' bats went quiet while chatter and tension between the teams, as well as the umpires, was in plentiful supply. The Cincinnati Reds lived off home runs in order to take the series against the San Francisco Giants. When the home runs weren't attainable or available in the series finale, the lack of them prevented the Reds from sweeping the Giants. In fact, after the benches cleared after the final pitch of the series − a swinging third strike by Sal Stewart against Giants closer Erik Miller, followed by an exchange between both players that caused the dugouts and bullpens to empty.
