Heidi Hucke ‘26 places horse hair on to her ceramic piece for the raku kiln fire April 7 outside of E1277. Jennifer King’s Ceramics II class was given the opportunity to fire their pieces outdoors during the school day. According to Soul Ceramics, raku firing is an ancient Japanese technique where ceramics are taken from the kiln while still hot and are placed into combustible materials in a closed space. Starving the piece of oxygen allows for the glaze to turn an assortment of colors. Hucke spent hours creating her piece by throwing spheres on the pottery wheel. “It took me two months to create the form,” Hucke said. “[Today was] me just going for it.” Reporting by: C.
