#TBT: Meet Nelson Stewart, likely Lilly's first African-American employee. He joined Lilly as a delivery boy in April 1908, just before turning 13 years young. Stewart joined the #USArmy on his birthday in 1917 and served in World War I before returning to Lilly after receiving an honorable discharge in 1919. He went on to hold three more roles in the company, and this photo ran under the headline "Folks You Should Know Better" in an #EliLilly publication in the early 1940s. "Nelson has been in the employ of the New Orleans Branch for thirty-three years," read the accompanying article, "and his long record of conscientious service entitles him to honorable mention in our series of 'Folks You Should Know.'" Nelson Stewart, we salute you. #BlackHistoryMonth #WeAreLilly #blackhistory #heritage #history #blackhistorymonth2016
