Paul Revere, a skilled silversmith and engraver, later contributed as a coppersmith to USS Constitution, providing its first ship’s bell and its second copper sheathing. He also played a critical role in the opening moments of the American Revolution. On the night of April 18, 1775, Paul Revere, along with William Dawes and Samuel Prescott, was tasked by Joseph Warren to warn colonial militias that British troops were marching out of Boston. Prior to his departure, Revere arranged a signal at Old North Church: two lanterns would be displayed to indicate that British forces were crossing the Charles River by water. After leaving Boston, he crossed into Charlestown, secured a horse, and began his ride.
