There are countless moments Travis (Assiniboine and Sioux) has missed with his family. He is one of 856 people in Washington who are serving an overly long sentence because of juvenile points – the practice of automatically adding time to a person’s sentence based on their juvenile record. Lawmakers stopped this practice in 2023, but they failed to include people like Travis who were sentenced under outdated and unfair guidelines. Native Americans in Washington with juvenile convictions who were sentenced prior to 2023 are serving, on average, an additional 9 years of time compared to those sentenced today. Washington lawmakers already decided this practice is racially-biased and unfair. The people who have been punished twice deserve a chance at a fair sentence.
