When we change an unfair law, it must apply equally. Across the board – to everyone – without exception. In 2023, Washington state passed a law that stopped automatically punishing adults with juvenile records twice. But the law only helped people who were sentenced after it took effect, and not the hundreds of people who the old system hurt. In practical terms: There are 856 currently incarcerated people in Washington – the majority of whom are people of color – who are stuck serving an overly long sentence they would not receive today – simply because of their sentencing date. This is arbitrary and unfair. We’re working to change the law to provide an opportunity for anyone who’s being punished twice to have their sentences reviewed by a judge – giving them a chance – not a guarantee – of fairness and life at home.
