When we try to fix harm with more harm, we end up running in circles. Lauren knows this as a survivor and advocate striving for change in the criminal legal system. “I kept seeing patterns throughout my life. Whenever something bad happened, I could tell where it came from. I could trace, like, the violence from me, to the person that did it, to the things that they experienced.” She sees acknowledgement and repair – and being mindful not to “make more harm in response to harm” – as the way forward. Part of this work also requires us to take stock of the laws currently in place, acknowledge the past and current harm being caused by them, and do what we can to make the criminal legal system more just.
