To Lauren, justice means doing what works to stop cycles of harm. And for her, that is not layering systemic harm on top of personal ones. There are 856 currently incarcerated people in Washington who are stuck serving lengthy sentences they likely wouldn’t receive if they were sentenced for the same crime today. That's because when Washington passed a law in 2023 to stop automatically punishing people with a juvenile record twice, it failed to include everyone. This has had broad reaching impacts on not only those incarcerated, but their families, survivors, and other community members.
