I have been experimenting with polycarbonate panels. This table/desk is quite strong and only weighs 19lbs including the hardware and the totalboat epoxy I used to seal the ends of the table top. Weight might not seem like an important consideration but If I ever was to make a direct to consumer furniture product I would design with weight in mind to create a competitive advantage around shipping.
