Antarctica might seem a frozen, lifeless place at first glance, but marine biologist and National Geographic Explorer Cristian Lagger is uncovering a very different story just offshore. On recent deep-sea expeditions in the Southern Ocean aboard the Schmidt Ocean Institute’s research vessel, Falkor (too), Lagger’s team has found thriving ecosystems deep below the surface—where icefish guard their eggs, octopuses drift through the currents, and colorful sponges and sea stars cover the seafloor. Rolex and the National Geographic Society are partnering on science-based expeditions to explore, study, and document change in the planet’s unique regions.
