For millennia, Native Hawaiians have managed land and sea as one connected system, stretching from ridge to reef. Loko iʻa—stone-walled fishponds that regulate the flow between pond and ocean—reflect a belief that the sea is a living relative, not a resource to be consumed. Hawaiʻi Blue Schools Hui aims to build students’ ocean literacy through place-based action projects that celebrate Hawaiʻi’s unique biodiversity and rich cultural legacy.
