The bluebells are HERE! We hiked Illinois Canyon yesterday and the Virginia bluebells are popping off right now. They start as pink buds, open into bright blue flowers, and completely transform the canyon floor. But they only last about 10 to 14 days before they disappear, so the window is short!
Peak bloom is expected now through May 3. They came in a little early this year thanks to warm temps and steady rain. If you’ve been waiting for the right time to go, this is it.
Save this for your trip. Here’s what to know:
📍 Illinois Canyon Trail, Starved Rock State Park
🅿️ The Illinois Canyon lot is small and fills up fast on weekends. Get there early.
📸 Best light for photos is mid morning or late afternoon.
🌸 Stay on the trail. These flowers are fragile and support early season pollinators.
🥾Be prepared for muddy trails by wearing boots.
