Arya Ranganathan didn’t intend to be homeless for long. The 37-year-old from Westbury separated from her two daughters’ father more than four years ago and he fell behind on child support payments. So, in 2021, she turned to the Nassau Department of Social Services for help. Ranganathan is one of the growing number of people on Long Island who struggle to meet the cost of living and rely on DSS for survival.
