Women are the fastest-growing population in the U.S. justice system... and the one it was least designed to serve. 👩‍👧 190,600 women and girls are locked up in America on any given day. Women's jail incarceration has grown 33% since 2020, nearly twice the rate of men's. And 98% have experienced trauma. Most are mothers. The Council on Criminal Justice's Women's Justice Commission released major findings last fall: the system isn't built for women, and the cost is measured in broken families, untreated trauma, and cycles that span generations. The Commission's 2026 focus is on reentry because what happens when women come home determines everything for them, and for the children waiting.
