Cesar Chavez’s name was removed from the Student Center building’s facade and surrounding signage early Thursday morning. The calls for un-naming the building follow allegations of sexual abuse against Chavez in an investigation by The New York Times. These developments have prompted review of tributes to Chavez on national and local levels. “In this case, the intent is not (to) erase the history of the farmworker movement, which remains deeply important to me personally and also to our campus community, but about whether it is appropriate to continue honoring a single individual in a prominent student-centered and serving space when that recognition is in tension with survivor-centered values,” said Fabrizio Mejia, Interim Vice Chancellor of Equity and Inclusion in an email.
