Today, as we welcome a new group of students, faculty, staff, and alumni into Tri-Alpha—The National Honor Society for First-Generation College Students—we want to honor all first-generation alumni and celebrate their successes. “Being first-generation carries a sense of pride that you are starting a journey that will hopefully inspire and encourage others,” says Sonya Gaskins ’02. Sonya is a first-generation college graduate from Arcadia and a Jones Poundstone Society donor. She currently serves as a Representative-at-Large for the University and is an active member of BAAAU (Black Alumni Association of Arcadia University). Previously, Sonya was Co-Chair of BAAAU, part of the Events Outreach Committee, and was recognized for her service and talents to Arcadia by receiving the Mary Louis Armstrong Award.
