We explore NVIDIA's DLSS frame generation technology by pushing it to its limits in a wild thought experiment. Starting with expensive GPUs that can generate 5 extra frames between real frames, we drop Cyberpunk 2077 down to just 3-4 FPS and use frame generation to upscale it to 20 FPS, testing temporal stability and image quality. We are pushing DLSS frame generation to its absolute limit, by running the game at 4 FPS, then letting frame generation take it up to 20 FPS, essentially creating 16 AI frames, essentially AI generating 80% of the frames. We also tested 2X frame generation at 60 FPS in Alan Wake with full path tracing at 4K, finding it delivers the best balance of smoothness and latency. Throughout the experiment, we examine how well the technology handles transparency effects, artifacts, and overall visual fidelity when pushed far beyond NVIDIA's recommended 60 FPS minimum. The main questions I am attempting to answer are: - How does frame generation in games work - How l...
