For decades, Orlondo’s was shorthand. Say the name and people nodded knowingly: pizza, pasta, dressing by the bottle, a place you went before a bike ride, after a bike ride or instead of a bike ride altogether.
Patrick Orlondo Renda fed Des Moines for roughly 45 years, first near Drake University, then along the south side bike path and even in West Des Moines — each iteration threaded into the routines of whoever lived nearby.
Now Orlondo’s is coming back — not to the south side, at least not yet, but to Grimes, just off soccer fields that bustle year-round with whistles and cleats and families looking for somewhere better than a drive-thru once the game ends.
