@Grimes is teasing ‘Psy Opera,’ her first album since 2020’s ‘Miss Anthropocene.’ In a new Interview Magazine conversation with sci-fi author Nnedi Okorafor, Grimes reveals she quietly walked away from music entirely. ”I couldn’t listen to music without getting PTSD. I was like, ‘I’m just going to be a stay-at-home mom. Screw this,’” she explains. The return came gradually, through poetry, then lyrics shaped by what she describes as periods of “nihilism and vengefulness,” most of which didn’t make the record. The album is still not quite finished, includes tracks called “The Light Ages” and “Eve Is Online,” and touches on AI, human fragility, and consciousness—territory she’s been circling for years. On her relationship with AI, she explains, “I actually don’t use it in my music. People have really misunderstood me.” What she means is she doesn’t use generative AI as a production tool (no AI-generated instrumentation or voice cloning).
