I found everything I needed to do a really cool reaction between copper (II) chloride and aluminum at the hardware store! The copper chloride is made through a double displacement reaction that occurs between solutions of copper (II) sulfate, found in tree root killer, and calcium chloride, a common salt used to melt ice in wintertime. The reaction between copper chloride and aluminum generates hydrogen gas, which is very flammable! The blue green colors you see are the result of electrons in copper ions gaining and losing energy.
