American submarine Greyfish, under Commander Barney Doyle (Glenn Ford), is ordered to attack a Japanese convoy that includes the Shinaru, one of the Japanese aircraft carriers that led the attack on Pearl Harbor. The target's escort includes a transport ship carrying American prisoners from an internment camp in the Philippines where his wife and child were being held. Sloan (Ernest Borgnine) begs Doyle not to fire and risk hitting the transport ship but Doyle decides to fire anyways.
