A convicted sex offender can't live within 1,000 feet of a school building. But nothing in Ohio law stops one from walking in the front door. That surprised state Sens. Tim Schaffer, R-Lancaster, and Andrew Brenner, R-Delaware. So, they introduced Senate Bill 422 to ban most sex offenders from setting foot in schools and daycares. Here's how Ohio law currently works: Individuals convicted of sex crimes and offenses involving child victims are barred from living near schools and daycares. They must periodically register their home addresses in a statewide database to alert neighbors of their convictions. Sex offenders are sorted into three tiers based on the severity of the crime and the frequency of their reporting requirements.
