South African authorities are forcibly relocating some of the country’s poorest people into remote housing settlements, where they’re cut off from schools, hospitals and jobs. These settlements are supposed to be “temporary,” but residents say they’ve been abandoned there for as long as a decade, while local authorities are exploiting legal loopholes to get away with it. Yara Elmjouie travels to Wolwerivier, one of South Africa’s most notorious temporary relocation areas, to unpack how the apartheid-era practice of forced removals is continuing today.
