These are the sounds that could be included in the UK Phonics screening check… my advice with any ‘test’ is to take the pressure away and focus on making it fun without the stress. 6 year olds should NOT be tested but in the UK they sit a phonics screening check - if you want to support your child’s phonics learning it is NOT about reading nonsense words. It is about making your child feel confident when spotting these sounds in words. My tips: ✨Practice recognising all these sounds. ✨Add actions to the sounds to make them memorable and enjoyable. ✨Look at words containing these sounds and ask your child to become a sound detective. Can they spot the digraph/ trigraph/ special sound in each word before they read it. All this will help them to learn to READ with the purpose of a lifelong of story enjoyment.
