Today is World Penguin Day, and this year brings a sobering update. The Emperor Penguin was recently added to the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. Earth's largest penguin, and one of Antarctica's most iconic animals, is now in documented decline. Emperors depend on stable sea ice to breed, but when that ice becomes unreliable, the effect on the colonies is dramatic. To understand what is happening to these populations, scientists have to work in one of the most demanding environments on Earth.
