If you’re under the age of 17, you will be never be able to legally buy cigarettes. The Tobacco and Vapes Bill has cleared Parliament, marking the next step towards creating a smoke-free generation in the UK. When it gets royal assent, ministers will also have new powers to regulate tobacco, vaping and nicotine products, including their flavours and packaging. It is part of a series of measures aimed at tackling the health effects of smoking, one of the UK's leading causes of preventable death, disability and ill health. Health minister Baroness Merron described the Bill as the “biggest public health intervention in a generation”, adding that “it will save lives.” However, not everyone agrees with the Bill, with one Conservative former MP saying it upsets “a great many people in that industry", including retailers.
