It feels like every fifth day we talk about how good Max Fried is. He has a 2.40 ERA in 41.1 IP this season. He has a 99th percentile 10 Pitching Value, according to Baseball Savant, too. Elite is undersells him as a descriptor. That eight-inning, nine-strikeout performance at Fenway Park was a gem, but one person who should get a ton of credit for what happened is Matt Blake. After the second inning, when Fried got out of a jam with runners on second and third by striking out the side, Blake apparently went up to Fried. He told him to pitch from the stretch for the rest of the game. The results were one of Fried’s best starts while with the Yankees. I’m curious to see if Fried keeps doing this from this point on.
