A historic church in Queens was destroyed by a fire — and some neighbors think it was no accident.
The charred remains of the First Reformed Church of Astoria were still smoldering on 12th street in Astoria. Early in the morning, a man snuck inside to remove precious pictures dating back to 1885 from the church walls that were spared from the flames.
Neighbors believe it may be a case of arson and are distraught that the neighborhood staple is gone.
One neighbor said there were people coming frequently who "wanted this church to be destroyed and to put [up] a building, and that's horrible...I am swearing it was done on purpose."
