A new data analysis revealed that Central California’s alcohol-related crashes hold a fatality rate that is more than double the statewide average. A data analysis, aimed at improving prevention efforts and reducing deadly crashes and conducted by a Fresno State research institute, found that in 2023 the Central California region recorded roughly six deaths per 100,000 people from alcohol-related DUI fatalities, compared with a statewide rate of about three per 100,000. “This is a public health crisis,” Alyssa Kennett, director of the Central California Public Health Consortium and researcher in the study, said. “Traffic fatalities are much higher in Central California across the board, but alcohol related fatalities are exceptionally high.” In Fresno County alone, there were more than 1,700 deadly crashes caused by drunk drivers from 2010 to 2023, the analysis found.
